Criteria for assessment and (possible) provision of AAC aids with Liverpool.

 

All children and young people will need to satisfy all of the criteria listed below.

The assessment process will assist in identifying and enabling a child or young person to communicate either by using low tech systems, high tech systems or a combination of both.

  • An ability to understand cause and effect e.g. purposeful use of a switch.
  • Intentional communication. (The ability to initiate communication is some recognisable form)
  • Some reliable intentional movement.
  • Turn taking skills at some basic level.
  • To have in place a communication system e.g. communication book/board.
  • A commitment that the child’s school and parent/carer will work in partnership with the professionals.
